Biological control is possible in ornamental and green spaces
Added on 11 November 2020
This webinar was also joined by Eduardo Martí Sánchez, Technical Secretary of ASFPLANT (professional association of flowers, plants and horticultural technology of the Valencian Community), Antonio López Cappa, Managing Director of ASOCAN (Association of growers and exporters of flowers and live plants of Canarias), Juan José Pastor Pérez, Technical specialist in ornamentals at PLANTAL PRODUCCIONES and Ángel Martínez, Technical Director of VIVEROS LA PACHECA; who have shown their satisfaction for the use in biological control in ornamentals and green areas, in addition to exposing the reality of the situation in which they are in terms of phytosanitary permits in this sector.
Bioline Iberia has considered it very interesting to congratulate this sector, that has been hit by the Covid-19 health crisis, and acknowledge a lot of these producers who continue exporting millions of plants under strict quality protocols.
The experts have treated the main pests that affect these crops, as well as the various biological control techniques in ornamental plants such as pot plants (dipladenia, poinsettia, or cactus) as well as cut flowers, with extensive experience in rose, carnation, gerbera and chrysanthemum, among others.
For these cases, Bioline Iberia has presented exclusive release systems, such as blisters and controlled exit envelopes, such as the so-called bugline and stick envelopes. All of them adapted to the characteristics of these crops.
Green areas
Another area, perhaps less well known, is the application of biological control in green areas, where Bioline Iberia is also a referent. It has delved into different biosolutions for the control of pests as important as the pine processionary, through its exclusive Ecopiege® system or sexual confusion through the use of Pine T Pro Ball®.
It has also been discussed how to apply biological control to combat red weevil and Paysandisia in palm trees through the use of entomopathogenic nematodes (Exhibitline Sc) and with the help of attractive traps (Rynchotap ®).
In the case of boxwood, Bioline has Tricholine Buxus, which contains specific trichogramms for the boxwood caterpillar (Cydalima perspectalis), a pest very present in both green spaces and forests.
Finally, biological solutions have been reviewed for the control of other pests such as aphids and psilas, mainly in alignment trees such as jacaranda, linden, catalpa ... as well as other types of frequent plants in urban green areas, for which they have been developed and consolidated biological control strategies, such as hibiscus, oleanders, or cypresses.
Finally, Manuel Gómez, has emphasized the importance of his innovative exclusive release systems from Bioline Agrosciences, based on an emergency technology for these parasitoids and predators. Their versatility has allowed them to position themselves as world leaders in biocontrol in the ornamental sector.
In short, an attempt has been made to convey to producers, clients and consumers in general, the importance of using these biological techniques for pest control. It is more and more frequent for municipalities to demand healthy areas with more green spaces, respecting the environment, and prioritizing biological techniques over phytosanitary ones.
