Strengthening agricultural ties between Japan and the Netherlands
Added on 05 February 2025
This Horticultural Trade & Innovate Mission is organized by Dutch Greenhouse Delta, the Netherlands Embassy in Japan, the Municipality of Westland, and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency. During this journey, Dutch horticultural technology suppliers will engage with local growers, researchers, and government representatives in key agricultural regions such as Kochi, Aichi, Shizuoka, Tokyo, Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures. The visit will focus on strengthening partnerships, exchanging knowledge, and understanding local ambitions and challenges in preparation for the Expo.
The program provides visits to various agricultural facilities and key stakeholders, offering insights into sustainable and efficient food production methods in Japan. The program in Kochi, arranged with the support of the Kochi Prefectural Government, will provide opportunities for discussions with local growers, government officials, and experts about developments, ambitions, and needs in the region. These discussions build on the horticultural friendship established in 2009 between the Municipality of Westland and Kochi Prefecture, a relationship that has fostered mutual knowledge exchange and collaboration.
Additionally, the delegation will join discussions with the Japan Plant Factory Association (JPFA) and hear insights from Agri Connect, a consultancy specializing in agriculture presenting key findings from their market study on opportunities for Dutch horticultural technology in Japan. A special event at the Dutch Ambassador’s Residence in Tokyo will bring together press and stakeholders, such as the Japan Greenhouse Horticulture Association (JGHA), to discuss opportunities for strengthening collaboration between Japan and the Netherlands. The delegation will also announce new initiatives to enhance public-private cooperation in horticulture, addressing its growing role in revitalizing rural areas and presenting solutions that will benefit stakeholders in Japan and beyond.
Preparation for Expo 2025 Osaka
This mission also serves as a prelude to the Netherlands’ contribution to Expo 2025 Osaka, where its national pavilion will focus on the themes Climate, Food, Health, Tech and Culture. Dutch Greenhouse Delta leads the horticultural track within the “Food” theme, which will emphasize collaboration on Controlled Environment Agriculture to boost Japan’s food self-sufficiency and to revitalize Japan’s rural areas. The programming will be carried out in close collaboration with the municipality of Westland, the Netherlands Embassy in Japan, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature in the Netherlands.
By strengthening existing relationships and exploring opportunities for collaboration at the Expo, the Netherlands and Japan continue to build on common ground and their shared commitment to sustainable and innovative food production.
