Spain sees flower and plant export booming over 2022

Spanish living plant and fresh-cut flowers exporters generated revenues of € 514.7 million over the first nine months of 2022, up 5 per cent compared to the same period in 2021, according to Spanish Customs Administration and Special Taxes data.

In processing the data, industry body Federación Española de Asociaciones de Productores Exportadores de Frutas, Hortalizas, Flores y Plantas Vivas (FEPEX) found that living plants Made in Spain continue to be the most notable export product. Export of what in Spanish is known as ‘planta viva’ rose by five per cent compared to the first nine months of 2021, representing a value of €424.5 million.

Spanish-grown cut flowers also have their day, albeit more modest, with exports rising by 2 per cent compared to last year’s period, representing €51.2 million.

One of the fastest-growing sectors is cut foliage which saw its export sales rise by 12 per cent to  €29.9 million. Export sales of Spanish-grown bulbs grew to €8.4 million, a rise of 2 per cent in the same period in 2021.

The numbers by autonomous region indicate that flower and plant exports from Valencia, aka Comunitat Valenciana topped €151.7 million over the first nine months of 2022, a five per cent rise on the same period in 2021.
