Educating consumers on different vegetable production systems

Consumers often have questions about the differences between different types of farming, and this includes a hydroponic greenhouse compared to a vertical indoor farming operation.

If you're looking for a great way to educate your customers, here's a great example. It's a video from John Bonner, CEO of Great Lakes Growers in Burton, OH, discussing the similarities as well as one big difference.

According to Bonner, the similar features between the two types of production include environmental climate control, water recapturing systems, facilities close to major population centers (which means less food miles), and fewer food safety concerns.

However, the big difference Bonner highlights is energy use.

"Growing in a greenhouse, we have the ability to use natural sunlight, which is the best producer of light. We can capture the sun's radiation and turn it into heat energy, regardless of the temperature," Bonner says. "For cooling, we can just open the roof, or use a shade curtain system that requires very little energy use."

The result, Bonner says, is that every pound of lettuce is produced using less energy in a greenhouse than in an indoor vertical farm.
