Learn more about how to grow and use hydroponic mint below.

How to Grow Hydroponic Mint

Hydroponic mint is a favorite, not just for its many uses and benefits but also because it's exceptionally easy to grow. Once you get the conditions and nutrients right, you'll be rewarded with a bounty of fresh, crisp mint leaves. Here are the conditions that mint prefers in a hydroponic system:

  • Mint needs 14-16 hours of sunlight (or grow lights) per day.
  • If you're using grow lights, aim for blue spectrum lights to encourage growth.
  • Keep the temperature around your mint plants between 65-70°F in the day and 50-55°F at night.
  • Your water should remain at a pH range of 6.0-7.0 and an EC of 2.2-2.6.
  • Mint root systems should be constantly moist, so ensure they aren't given time to dry out.
  • Avoid nutrient solutions designed to encourage flowering. Choose a simple and balanced formula for best results.

Hydroponic Mint Nutrition and Health

Mint is unquestionably delicious and nutritious too! While you likely won't consume enough to meet the requirements for any specific nutrients, it does contain several vitamins and minerals. Just half an ounce (about ? cup) of fresh mint will provide a gram of fiber, 12% of your daily allowance of vitamin A, 9% of iron, 8% of manganese, and 4% of folate. So go ahead and try a handful in your favorite salad.

Mint has also been used in traditional medicine for centuries. It's a favorite ingredient for covering bad breath, and chewing the fresh leaves may actually help kill the bacteria that causes it. Today, many people also use it to relieve digestive symptoms, including those associated with irritable bowel syndrome. It's said to help improve brain function and, more specifically, memory. When applied to the skin, it can help relieve the pain associated with breastfeeding. And some swear by it as a home remedy for various cold symptoms too.

How to Use Hydroponic Mint

Mint is one of the most versatile herbs in most gardens. It's useful in foods and beverages, sweet and savory recipes, and can be used raw or baked into your favorite treats.
