Popoyan inaugurates modern Tissue Culture Laboratory in Guatemala

Pegón Piloncito, a business unit of Popoyán® is responsible for the production of seedlings of different crops for Guatemala and neighboring countries. With an annual production of more than 300 million seedlings, Pegón Piloncito produces seedlings from seed, cuttings, and now tissue culture.

The company recently inaugurated the Tissue Culture Laboratory Pegón InVitro® - PIV® as part of the expansion strategy of the services offered by the company. Francisco Viteri, General Manager of Popoyán® mentions: “This new laboratory is intended to complement generated in the domestic and international market.”

Located 40 km away from the International Airport in Guatemala City. Mr. Viteri adds: “This project responds to the near-shoring strategy of Popoyan®. Guatemala is strategically located near the US Market and has very good logistic connections to the EUROPEAN Market.”

Pegón InVitro® - PIV® is a high-end laboratory built with modern infrastructure and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, such as climatic chambers, LED trolleys, media preparators and a specialized temporary immersion bioreactor room.

In its first phase, the laboratory has a production capacity of 10 million plants, 5 million through the traditional Tissue Culture production method and 5 million plants through the Temporary Immersion Bioreactor (TIB) technique. The laboratory is also equipped to produce cultures using techniques such as somatic embryogenesis. The vision of the project is that in the short term the capacity can be significantly increased. Mr. Viteri adds: “Market reaction on the project has surpassed our expectations.”

The laboratory has the capacity to produce a great diversity of crops such as banana, plantain, berries, ornamentals, coffee, agave and others. 

In crops such as ornamentals, banana and plantain, Pegón InVitro® - PIV® technology allows the production of elite materials and disease-free plants. All these crops produced in the lab and exported to any part of the world.

Pegón InVitro® - PIV® started operations on September 2023 and the first commercial shipments to EUROPE and USA will start this year.
