Four grower mum variety favs from 2020

We reached out to growers to ask about their favorite mum varieties from their summer trials. Penny Merritt-Price of Young's Plant Farm in Auburn, AL, and Rose Oberholtzer of Mast Young Plants in Grand Rapids, MI, shared four of their top picks for you to consider for mum production in 2021.

Mum 'Strawberry Ice Pink' (Dümmen Orange, Mast Young Plants)

Early Season

'Strawberry Ice Pink,' a new 2021 introduction from Dümmen Orange, is a pink/red mum with a deep-pink eye. Flowers lighten as they age, but the color pattern doesn't fade. In our natural season trials, this variety reached cracking color in week 36, making this mum an excellent choice for early season sales. We liked this variety because of its interesting flower color." — Rose Oberholtzer, Mast Young Plants

Mum 'Lively Red Bicolor' (Dümmen Orange, Youngs Plant Farm)

Early Season

Penny Merritt-Price of Young's Plant Farm in Auburn, AL, chose 'Lively Red Bicolor' from Dümmen Orange as one of her favorites from fall mum trials. 'Lively Red Bicolor' has strong color retention and great heat performance. It also performs well in blackcloth.

Mum 'Hailey Gold Improved' (Syngenta Flowers, Youngs Plant Farm)

Mid-Season

Another top pick from Merritt-Price of Young's Plant Farm, 'Hailey Gold Improved' from Syngenta Flowers is more yellow than the original Hailey Gold, and its vigor and response are more in line with 'Hailey Gold Orange' and 'Hailey Red Bronze.'

Mum 'Rihanna Red' (Syngenta Flowers, Mast Young Plants)

Late Season

"'Rihanna Red' [Syngenta Flowers] had a great habit in trials this year and was cracking color in Week 39 for us. Color retention on this variety was excellent. This is a great choice for a natural late-season mum. We liked this variety because of its habit and color." — Rose Oberholtzer, Mast Young Plants
