High-wire greenhouse cucumber production

High-wire greenhouse cucumber production

High-wire greenhouse cucumber production was first introduced in the 1990s, but it took a few years for the industry to catch on to its potential.

Marcel Huibers, manager of Hortus in Futuro in Maasbree, The Netherlands, experienced the introduction of this cultivation system up close. At the start of its development, Huibers worked at Nunhems as a sales specialist in cucumbers. Between 1999 and 2015, he focused on high-wire cultivation, looking for opportunities and solutions for growers.

This year, BASF Vegetable Seeds recognizes 20 years of cucumber breeding for high-wire cultivation. Check out this video where Huibers discusses the initial development of high-wire cultivation, how it has evolved, varieties best suited for high-wire production, and tips on best practices.
