How to: Aeroponic lettuce

A type of hydroponic garden, an aeroponic garden weighs less and uses significantly less water than a traditional system. By misting the roots of vegetables with a nutrient-filled hydroponic fertilizer solution and recirculating the solution over several weeks, this automated system maintains your garden even when you're out of town. Smaller vegetables, such as lettuce, are easily grown in the lightweight net pots. Lettuce, being a cool weather crop, is usually grown year-round in the cloudy coastal regions or in the early spring or late fall in the inland valleys.

  1. Assemble the aeroponic system according to the manufacturer's instructions. Place the system where it receives bright sunlight for at least six to eight hours daily and near a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protected outlet.

  2. Arrange rock wool cubes on a waterproof tray. Place the tray in a brightly lit, cool location, where the temperature remains between 55 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

  3. Place two or three lettuce seeds into each cube, pushing them one-quarter inch into the rock wool. Mist thoroughly and keep moist. Lettuce germinates in two to four days when the temperature remains cool, approximately 65 F.
