One floral expert has answers about rotating insecticides

Ornamental growers looking to build or improve their insecticide rotation program should not hesitate to reach out to experts for their advice.

"As a researcher and educator, I receive questions that touch on the minutia of how to build a successful insecticide rotation program as I preach and write about the importance of developing a rotation program," said Juang Horng Chong of the Clemson University Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences in a recent post on American Floral Endowment's (AFE) website. "In the simplest terms, rotating pesticides is like playing a game of 'follow the numbers.'"

Some of the recent questions Chong has fielded included:

  • Do I need to build a rotation plan for each pest I have in my greenhouse?
  • How do I know which mode of action or product to include in my rotation program?
  • How do I build a rotation program that won't hurt my biological control agent program?
  • When do I need to switch to a new mode of action?
