Protecting lives is more important than garden centre profits

MY jaw dropped at the crass comments from Mr James Barnes, chairman of the Horticultural Trades Association, who said about garden centres that "the delay in reopening has meant that the Scottish horticulture industry is at a significant disadvantage to the rest of the UK, having lost a crucial trading period at a daily cost of Ł1 million" (Scottish garden centres to re-open after 'delay', May 29).

Perhaps he should have prefaced his remarks with "I have no interest in or consideration of, the thousands of dead and dying, as I'm only concerned with my profit margins."

Significant disadvantage?? The populace of Scotland are at a significant ADVANTAGE of staying alive due to our government's common sense and careful approach.

I'd be interested to know if the English Tories in London are "bringing forward a Dutch-style grant aid scheme for plant nurseries" as he requests from the Scottish Government.Barry StewartBlantyre
