Too hot in your greenhouse? Choose the right shading
Added on 11 August 2021
Don't make the same mistake next summer: be on time with choosing the right shading.
ReduSystems® is global leader in developing greenhouse coatings and cleaners.
Coatings can be applied manually, with a machine or helicopter.
You may have noticed that due to the extreme heat, you have too little or not the right shading in your greenhouse. When we talk to growers, we often hear that a moveable screen does not shade enough and black netting too much. Another disadvantage of a screen is that some of the energy that accumulates above closed screens will still spread into the greenhouse and it quickly becomes too hot.
This is one of the reasons why many growers also opt for a shading coating. A coating is more effective in keeping excessive light and heat out of greenhouses. When used in combination with a movable screen, the coating provides the basic protection, and the screen can act as an 'emergency brake' in the case of extremes.
Let's ask a grower
MightyVine currently grows 22.5 acres (9 hectares) of vine and cherry tomatoes in Rochelle, Illinois. The greenhouse operation is doing well and planning to expand to 30 acres (12 hectares) in April. MightyVine uses the ReduHeat coating to reflect the heat and let more grow light through.
Ruben Vicencio, Head Grower MightyVine: "We cannot grow without a coating on the glass of the greenhouse. The climate here is simply too harsh for that. If we do not use any coatings, we run into Blossom End Rot and thin heads on the plants, and that adversely affects production. It is important to apply the coating on time. When you are too late, this can cost you a truss."
