After three years of planning and fundraising, Pleasant Hill has finally debuted their new greenhouse lab to the community.

The event was hosted by Pleasant Hill's Future Farmers of America chapter. The facility will serve as a hands-on teaching method for students K-12, who will utilize the space in a variety of ways.

Micayla Stam is the president of the chapter. She explained that the greenhouse had been talked about for years.

"We were just starting the basics of it," Stam said. "We were talking about how we're going to build it and what we're going to put into it. We went over systems like the hydroponic system, the heating, cooling and even visited other greenhouses."

Angela White is an agriculture science teacher at Pleasant Hill, the FFA advisor and the greenhouse manager. She said that this wouldn't be possible without her students.

"They're amazing," White said. "They've been instrumental in writing grants and fundraising. They have really embraced the new curriculum when it comes to learning about soils and plants. If they're excited and passionate about something, they share that with others."

White described the facility as a step above the average gardener's greenhouse and said that the school takes great pride in the collaboration between the high school and younger students.

"Our older students go and work with the elementary school to start to develop that passion for education in agriculture at a really young age," White said.

The project cost around $330,000 and was funded primarily from writing grants and other fundraising. The facility is currently finishing its last furnishings and security additions.

"It's surreal to actually see our greenhouse being done," Stam said.

The greenhouse is located at Pleasant Hill High School.
