"Our vision to be a leading biopesticide technology developer, reducing the need for synthetic pesticides, has led us to where we are today," said Dr Minshad Ansari, Founder and CEO of Bionema. "Having successful developed a range of biological solutions for the horticulture, turf amenity and forestry sectors, and now divested two novel technologies to Syngenta, we are excited to see how Syngenta will commercialise those globally, but we are equally excited about the opportunity to refocus our company growth strategy, including public health.
New technologies and products are reflected in the company's brand new website, which is focused on Bionema's new growth strategy. As well as continuing the company's offering in horticulture, turf amenity and forestry, this now includes products and services for the public health sector, as the company launches a new range of products for insects transmitting human diseases, such as mosquitoes, biting midges, sand flies and ticks.
Dr Ansari said: "Farmers, growers, greenkeepers and foresters are looking for alternative solutions for pest and disease control, and Bionema is inventing and commercialising products to fill the gaps in the market - especially product gaps created by the removal of toxic pesticides."
Bionema believes that unique products and delivery systems can meet the expectations of end users when it comes to use of biological solutions.
Bionema has a robust patent portfolio, and the company has collected a library of more than a hundred commercially-viable microorganisms for pipeline candidates. Using the company's innovative formulation and delivery technologies can lead to biopesticides that deliver higher virulence, stability, spore yields, wide host range and high kill rate to different cropping systems.
"Bionema will continue to innovate and develop new technologies for the biocontrol sector," said Dr Sarah Harding, Head of Global Innovation. "It's actually great fun to be starting again on some new products - I think the whole team agrees that seeing two products through to maturation was great, but every innovator knows that the exciting part is in the discovery and development!"
Headquartered at Swansea University in Wales (UK), Bionema benefits from an academic environment with high-quality facilities, enabling the company to offer a range of services, from strain identification, selection and improvement and analytical R&D solutions, to production, formulation and application.
