Emirates Flight Catering opens world's largest vertical farm

World 'firsts' are not uncommon in Dubai.
The city boasts the world's tallest building with the Burj Khalifa standing at 828 metres high, there is Aura Skypool which is the world's highest 360-degree infinity pool and the deepest pool around the globe is found at Deep Dive Dubai.
Adding to the long list of accolades is now the world's largest vertical farm which will annually save more than 250 million litres of water and produce over one million kilograms of pesticides free produce.
The hydroponic farm, named Bustanica, is a whopping 330,000sqft and is the first vertical farm for Emirates Crop One, the joint venture between Emirates Flight Catering (EKFC) and Crop One.
Located near Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, it is planned that the vertical farm will produce more than 1,000,000 kilograms of high-quality leafy greens a year. Without the need for soil, and only a small amount of water used for the crops, the process is more eco-friendly than traditional farming techniques,
If you are taking a flight with Emirates you will be munching on greens grown in Bustanica.
Expect to see lettuces, arugula, mixed salad greens, and spinach onboard flights from July and soon it is hoped that Bustanica produce will be for sale in local supermarkets in the city.
