The third edition of VertiFarm and the 8th edition of the Association for Vertical Farming (AVF) Summit commenced today, marking a significant moment for the industry. According to AVF President Christine Zimmermann-Loessl, substantial knowledge has been gained in recent years regarding vertical farming. Interest is rapidly expanding, not only for the production of lettuce but also for cultivating more diverse crops like algae, saffron, ginseng, and even cocoa and hops.

Marc Oshima, co-founder of AeroFarms, highlighted that this evolution demands more advanced technologies and specialized expertise. The sector is diligently progressing in this direction, he noted, emphasizing that a great deal has been learned over the past two decades.

Additionally, David Meszaros of Smartkas pointed out the growing interest in vertical farms for propagation and integration into existing greenhouses. This suggests that vertical farming need not function solely as a standalone production system. There is also a rising demand for fully functional, turnkey solutions, he remarked.

Until Thursday, vertical farming will remain at the center of attention in Dortmund during VertiFarm and the AVF Summit. The event features an extensive program, including talks from Jan Bredack of Orbifarms and Prince Kayode Oguntayo of GreenBeeries on Wednesday. For the complete program, visit the official website. Romy Stuik will be reporting from the trade fair on behalf of Hortibiz and Hortibiz Newsradio, with live updates available on www.hortibiznewsradio.nl.
