Closing event project Green Cities Europe

Closing event project Green Cities Europe

Green Cities Europe is an initiative of the European Nurserystock Association (ENA) together with nursery stock organizations in 13 European countries. The aim of this European project is to draw attention to the importance of greenery in urban areas and to emphasize the positive effects of public green spaces on biodiversity, climate, wellness and air quality. The project ends this year with a closing event in the greenest café in Brussels on the 7th of November.

Facts

In the middle of the current century 70% of the world’s population will be living in urban areas. Today, many urban areas are already suffering from the negative effects of climate change, as well as other negative consequences such as undermined social cohesion. Around 2050 the negative consequences of climate change on living conditions will be dramatic, due to higher temperature, more frequent and excessive rainfall with consequential flooding, more widespread and excessive drought.

European project for a sustainable climate

Green Cities Europe is a platform that encourages the greening of public spaces by providing innovative ideas, information based on scientific research and technical expertise. Its activities address certain themes: health, climate, economy, biodiversity and social cohesion. The participating countries are Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Green Cities award for successful urban greening projects

Once a year Green Cities Europe organizes the ‘Green Cities Award’-competition. Each European country in this program can delegate a national urban greening project. The aim of this competition is to reward inspiring projects that make excellent use of plants and green solutions to combat climate change, stem biodiversity loss and improve social cohesion and local urban life. This year’s winners will be announced during the closing ceremony on the 7th of November in the presence of several members of the European Parliament, including Mr. César Luena (Vice-Chair ENVI Committee and Nature Restoration Law rapporteur) and Mr. Tom Vandenkendelaere (MEP).

Experience the value of green in the greenest café in Brussels

The closing event takes place in the heart of Brussels at Luxembourg Square. Yet those present will not feel like they are in the city; on the contrary, they will find themselves surrounded by green. As from Monday afternoon, November 6, until Friday afternoon, Bar Ginette (Luxembourg Square 5) will be transformed into a green oasis. At Bar Ginette visitors will experience firsthand the value and beauty of a green environment and enjoy lunch in a green and healthy environment.

During that week we will also decorate Café Luxembourg, on the other side of the square, with extra greenery. Feel free to come and experience it for yourself!
