HortiFootPrint Calculator nominated for the award
Added on 07 June 2022
The HortiFootprint Calculator, developed in collaboration with MPS, is an innovative software tool that measures the carbon footprint of horticultural production and provides the insights needed to develop and measure a successful sustainability strategy, with associated impact. The tool measures the carbon footprint of horticultural production based on inputs such as energy consumption, fertilizers and packaging materials. A scenario analysis feature makes it quick and easy to calculate the impact of changes made to these inputs in the future.
In 2021, several growers tested the tool, including Ammerlaan-Sosef. This pot plant nursery considers sustainability very important within their business and tries to implement it in their daily operations. The HortiFootprint Calculator helps the company to put the sustainability factor of their business into perspective by giving them insight into changes in the cultivation and production of their products. "For example, you can see in advance, if you change the plastic packaging to paper packaging, what impact that will have on the footprint. We invest in sustainable resources and we try to get the message across to consumers: this is sustainability," says Gertjan Sosef, co-owner of Ammerlaan-Sosef.
Winny van Heijningen, Sales Manager of LetsGrow.com, together with Raymond Scheepens of MPS, was able to present the HortiFootprint Calculator during the pitch moment for the jury last month. "What makes this tool really innovative is the ability to simulate different scenarios to see how changes in production methods would change the carbon footprint. You can see how your footprint would increase or decrease if you changed energy sources, used different fertilizers, switched from plastic to compostable packaging, and so on. This provides crucial information to make targeted investments for the greatest impact." Thus Winny and Raymond.
LetsGrow.com is curious which innovation will win the prize and is looking forward to the opening ceremony on June 14th.
