How can urban agriculture mitigate climate change
Added on 22 July 2022
The negative impacts of agriculture result from problems like:
Methane production
Soil tilling
Agricultural runoff
Food miles
Chemical fertilizer production
Deforestation
Agriculture's carbon footprint is vast, and reducing emissions is a primary concern for those working toward environmental agriculture improvements for more sustainable cities. Fortunately, the movement toward vertical farming in urban settings can help to solve many of these problems simultaneously.
How Does Agriculture Affect Climate Change?
Where agriculture and climate change meet, disasters loom. Agricultural practices contribute significantly to the problems facing our ecosystems, and the effects of climate change are making agriculture more difficult. The data shows that, agriculture is one of the worst offenders when it comes to climate change.
The UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) recently stated that farming-related methane is one of the most crucial battles in the fight against climate change. This methane is primarily produced by livestock emissions, but also from crops like paddy rice cultivation which floods fields and prevents oxygen from reaching the soil. This, in turn, promotes the growth of methane-creating bacteria.
