Leading entomologist joins the World BioProtection Forum

Biological solutions for the control of pests and diseases present a fast-growing segment of AgriTech, and they offer a safe and sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides. This is particularly important as more chemicals are being withdrawn from the market due to their increasing incidence of environmental, human health and pest resistance, leaving growers helpless in the fight against a growing number of crop pests and diseases. The WBF is founded on the belief that, by creating the connections that allow individuals and companies to take biological technologies forward, the sector can more successfully provide the much-needed solutions without disturbing the environment.  

The WBF connects academia, innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers, biocontrol manufacturers, distributors, and public offices relevant to the biocontrol sector, with a view to nurturing scientific and technological innovations and maximising their commercial potential. The organisation is guided by an international Advisory Board that provides counsel on pertinent matters to ensure the WBF is steered wisely and intelligently, in a manner that provides value and advantages for the WBF's members. The latest high-profile personality to join the international Advisory Board is Dr Sam Jones, currently Technical Manager at International Pheromone Systems (IPS) in the UK.

Dr Jones holds a PhD in Chemical Ecology from the University of Sussex, a Masters in Entomology from Imperial College and Undergraduate degrees in Zoology and Chemistry from the Universities of Leeds and Leicester, respectively. He won the Dunlop Polymer Prize in Chemistry while studying at the University of Leicester. He uses his academic and industrial experience to develop and commercialise insect pest monitoring and control systems, with particular interest in chemical ecology, insect behaviour and taxonomy and insect-plant interactions. Dr Jones is responsible for devising and creating new products and solutions for the Integrated Pest Management market, usually in collaboration with commercial partners and Research Institutes.

Dr Jones is enthusiastic about adding his expertise and experience to the WBF's advisory panel, saying "It's an honour to be part of this important organisation and I am very much looking forward to contributing to its impactful work in the future."
