Would you pay $6 for one strawberry?

Not $6 a pint — $6 each.
They're made by a company called Oishii (it means "delicious" or "tasty" in Japanese) and they've become a cult fruit, prized by chefs, praised by food writers and bought by those who can afford the hefty price tag — eight large berries for $50, six medium berries for $29.
You won't find the Omakase berries in your local supermarket; they can be ordered online only and then picked up at five shops in North Jersey, or delivered to select locations in Hudson County.
Andrea Oldham, manager of Summit Cheese Shoppe in Summit, one of those five pickup locations, calls the Omakase berry "the best I've ever had. ... It's ruined other berries for me. I feel so spoiled."
"Strawberries so pure, so intense, and so sublime, they're transformative," Oishii proclaims on its website. "The next frontier of fruit."
Hiroki Koga, co-founder and CEO of Oishii, launched his company in 2018. The Japan-born entrepreneur says that when he visited the United States he was "dismayed" to find American strawberry growers favored "quantity over quality." So he brought Omakase berry seeds to the U.S., opening the nation's first vertical strawberry farm.
Why Kearny?
"Because of its close proximity to New York City," he replied. "We know that if we could entice New Yorkers, who have access to some of the best and most diverse culinary treasures in the U.S. and top Michelin-starred chefs, we could be successful in other cities."
