Bosch Berries announces new greenhouse operation with $50M

Bosch Berries, an international agriculture firm, is set to open a greenhouse operation in Somerset, Kentucky, representing a $50 million investment and creating 28 full-time jobs.

The company’s acquisition of the former AppHarvest facility marks its first venture into the U.S. greenhouse operation, focusing on bell peppers, blackberries, and strawberries. Kentucky’s agritech sector gains momentum with this significant investment, emphasizing the state’s role in sustainable agriculture and economic development. Local leaders and economic development authorities express strong support for Bosch Berries’ commitment to the Somerset community.

Strategic Acquisition and Growth

“Bosch Berries’ plan to locate its first location in the United States right here in the commonwealth speaks volumes about what our state has to offer,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. This move utilizes the pre-existing greenhouse infrastructure to enhance growing environments, implement new technologies, and establish a sustainable and efficient operation. The facility can support approximately 1 million strawberry plants, indicating this operation’s scale and potential impact.

Local and Economic Impact

“With some technical changes we have planned for this summer and introducing the best practices we have built through 90 years of greenhouse experience, we will make it one of the most successful greenhouses of its kind,” shared Tijmen and Wouter van den Bosch, co-directors of Bosch Berries. Local officials, including Pulaski County Judge/Executive Marshall Todd and Somerset Mayor Alan Keck, welcomed the project, highlighting its positive community and economic benefits. “Our community is excited and appreciative of Bosch Berries for their commitment to the Somerset facility,” stated Mayor Keck.
