Metals standards set for hydroponic fertilizers

Industries that rely on hydroponic and soilless cultivation systems are growing rapidly in terms of volume of food produced (including cannabis) and acreage. As a result, the production volume and the number of fertilizer and supplement products intended for use in hydroponics has increased to meet market demands. 

To support product safety, the CFIA administers metal standards that are based on cumulative application to soil. These soil-based standards are not directly applicable to hydroponic or soilless cultivation systems. To address this gap, the CFIA worked with fertilizer and supplement stakeholders to develop appropriate safety limits for metals that are achievable by the industry while protecting the consumer and the food supply chain from contamination. 

Based on scientific literature, risk considerations and industry counsel, the CFIA has adapted the current soil-based metal standards to hydroponic fertilizers and supplements.
