Why the houseplant industry is booming during COVID-19

Outdoor gardening isn't the only plant-related trend that has taken off during the COVID-19 pandemic. Increased time spent at home has also led to an explosion in the houseplant industry.

A recent article on HouseBeautiful.com outlines how plant owners, whether new or old, have been growing their collections at a rapid pace, and how the industry is trying to keep up in response.

"Plants are in fashion right now, but COVID fast-tracked it," says Dr. Melinda Knuth, Post-doctoral Research Assistant in the Food and Resource Economics Department at the University of Florida, in the article. And there's good reason for that. Knuth specializes in researching the effects of plants, greenspaces, and nature on humans, and was part of a recent study about the benefits of plants.

"People who live in plant rich environments report a higher life satisfaction rating, more than people who don't live in a plant rich environment," she says. "Adding more nature to our environment can have such a great impact and can change our mood and how we think."

The article also looks at how several online plant retail companies have seen a huge uptick in business, and how they have responded.
