Eden Green embarks on $40M indoor farming expansion

The company also is adding a new CFO to push its growth plan, despite other similar companies struggling.

Eden Green Technology, a company that grows lettuce for Walmart stores in indoor greenhouses in Cleburne, is embarking on a $40 million expansion that will boost its production to nearly six million pounds of leafy greens a year.

The company already supplies produce to 400 stores served by a nearby Walmart distribution center. The expansion includes two new greenhouses with 125,000 square feet of space for vertical growing and 10,000 square feet for packing and processing, said CEO Eddy Badrina.

The company operates two greenhouses in Cleburne now, with 75 workers. The expansion will create 100 jobs and help the company to meet Walmart’s rising demand for lettuce.

The company also hired Will Parkey as its new CFO to optimize its operations and eventually help the company expand outside Texas.

Eden Green uses vertical farming, a technique that requires less land and water than traditional outdoor farms. The company stacks its crops from floor to ceiling in greenhouses and grows produce in nutrient-enriched water instead of soil. Vertical farming can create a more consistent year-round food supply because it’s not affected by extreme weather events.
