Lettuce cultivation: Study looks at optimizing

Research by Hamid Reza Soufi, Roosta, and Mohsen Hamidpour (2023) focuses on optimizing hydroponic lettuce cultivation.

The study tests different nutrient solution replacement methods and LED light spectra on lettuce growth.

Results showed increased biomass production and yield in nutrient solution replacement based on plant needs and EC.

The combination of red/blue LED lights enhanced growth and yield in hydroponic systems.

The methods effectively reduced water, nutrient consumption, and electricity costs.

In a significant advancement in hydroponic farming, a 2023 study by Hamid Reza Soufi, Roosta, and Mohsen Hamidpour investigates the effects of various nutrient solution replacement methods and LED light spectra on lettuce cultivation. The study focused on two lettuce varieties, Lollo Rossa and Lollo Bionda, aimed to enhance growth while reducing resource consumption in hydroponic systems.

Findings revealed that replacing nutrient solutions based on plant needs or electrical conductivity (EC) significantly increased shoot fresh mass and yield index. Notably, using a combination of red and blue LED lights further boosted these growth metrics. This approach also led to increased concentrations of crucial minerals like nitrogen (N), potassium (K), and zinc (Zn) in the nutrient solutions.
