The wooden packaging industry presents Ecowoox in Brussels

FEDEMCO, Spanish Federation of Wooden Packaging and its Components, has started the internationalisation of the European Certification Mark ECOWOOX® that certifies the eco-design and recyclability of wooden packaging. Artur Vélez, Vice-President of FEDEMCO, has presented in Brussels this innovative European certification mark for wooden packaging.

First European certification mark for wooden packaging

The advantages provided by the certification are, among others, that verifies the wooden packaging is 100% recyclable and that it provides a high-quality waste that can be transformed into other wooden materials have been made known, thus extending the carbon cycle, betting on a greater circularity in the product and avoiding early recovery.

ECOWOOX® certifies all types of wooden packaging (sales, commercial and industrial) and is based on European standards UNE-EN 13427, UNE-EN 13428, UNE-EN 13429, UNE-EN 13430 and UNE-EN 13431. The technical regulation has been designed with the aim of complying with the requirements of national and European standards for packaging and packaging waste, whereby manufacturers must accredit packers, consumers and recyclers that they meet the basic requirements on the manufacture and composition of recyclable, reusable or energy-recoverable packaging. The process of obtaining the certification is verified by AIDIMME - Technological Institute of Metalworking, Furniture, Wood, Packaging and Related, which manages and helps applicant companies to obtain the certification mark. Likewise, the certification mark has a Quality Commission that includes the wood panel industries, wood packaging manufacturers and AIDIMME as a technological partner.

Wooden packaging, whether made of solid wood, fibreboard, plywood or a mixture of them, are completely recyclable, but to date there was no certification that guaranteed this recyclability and made it known, not only to the entire packaging value chain (suppliers, manufacturers, packers, distributors), but also the citizen and the final holder of the packaging (recyclers).

In just one year, the certification in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) has reached a market share of 80% of fruit and vegetable wooden packaging. The already consolidated project has initiated certification processes for companies in the sectors of wine cases, reels and wooden pallets.

Now, thanks to the help of the Generalitat Valenciana, ECOWOOX® begins its European expansion as a sectoral mark.

FEDEMCO values positively the sectoral certification and its contribution to the cascade use of wood for a more efficient use of wood waste.
